Intel shares surge as Q2 outlook tops estimates on AI
Intel shares rose more than 22% in premarket trading on April 24 after the chipmaker forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates, helped by demand for server CPUs used in AI systems and higher chip prices.
The company said part of the outlook reflected price increases, though manufacturing execution risks could limit how much of that demand it captures, said CFO David Zinsner.
At about US$81 a share, the move would add roughly US$75.3 billion to Intel’s market value, while AMD rose 7%, US-listed TSMC gained 3%, and LSEG data showed at least 14 brokerages raised their price targets after the results.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Nvidia ties and a shifting AI hardware mix
- Intel won a visible AI design slot when Nvidia picked Xeon 6 as the host central processing unit (CPU) for DGX Rubin NVL8 systems 1.
- Intel expects AI system design to tilt back toward CPUs, with the ratio of CPUs to graphics processing units (GPUs) moving from 1-to-8 toward 1-to-4 as processors handle more coordination work 1.
- That shift has fed commercial wins, including a long-term Google agreement for Xeon CPUs already in production plus some application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) work, with contracts that usually run three to five years 1.
- Intel did not put a number on unmet demand tied to supply limits. It called the gap meaningful and said it starts with a “b.” Supply should rise each quarter, said David Zinsner, Intel CFO 1.
What a recovery could mean for AI chips and manufacturing
- A stronger Intel could widen the AI hardware market after years in which GPUs and other AI accelerators, or chips built to speed up specific computing tasks, led spending 1.
- Intel argues CPUs matter more as AI moves from training to inference, which is running trained models, and to agentic applications, meaning software systems that can act on a user’s behalf. Accelerators still anchor the most advanced AI systems 1.
- Intel ties that rebound to manufacturing gains, including higher output of Intel 3-based Xeon 6 chips plus Intel 18A-based client products, alongside continued growth in foundry and advanced packaging 1.
- Intel also announced a partnership involving SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla to support TeraFab. Talks on its 14A process are underway, though commercial terms were not detailed 1.
