Intel offers up to 19x salaries to laid-off workers

Intel Israel has announced a new round of layoffs, impacting several hundred employees.

Employees with five years at the company may receive four months’ salary, while those with over ten years could get ten months’ pay.

Long-serving employees with more than 30 years may qualify for up to 19 months’ salary.

This includes workers at its Kiryat Gat plant, marking the first time layoffs have affected this facility, which employs around 4,000 of the company’s around 9,300 employees in Israel.

Employees who contest their dismissal in a hearing risk losing the enhanced severance package.

If Intel upholds the termination, they will only receive the statutory severance required by law.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Intel’s severance strategy reflects broader industry evolution toward more structured exits

Intel’s generous severance packages of up to 19 months’ salary for veterans represents a significant investment in smoothing its workforce transition during difficult times.

This approach aligns with broader industry trends, as 91% of employers have reviewed their severance policies in the past two years, with 70% making them more generous according to a survey of 700 HR leaders 1.

The company’s structured formula (providing more months based on tenure) reflects the increased standardization of severance calculations, with only 4% of companies now lacking set formulas 1.

However, Intel’s conditional approach, requiring employees to forfeit enhanced severance if they challenge dismissals, creates a distinct pressure point not commonly highlighted in industry benchmarking studies.

This strategy reveals how companies balance legal and financial considerations with reputation management during restructuring, effectively trading higher compensation for reduced resistance to workforce reductions.

2️⃣ Intel’s layoff pattern shows reactive rather than proactive workforce management

Intel’s current layoffs continue a pattern of periodic large-scale reductions rather than gradual adjustments, following earlier cuts of 10,500 jobs in 2006 and 12,000 in 2016 23.
