Intel joins Tesla, SpaceX in Musk’s AI chip project
Intel said it will join Elon Musk’s planned Terafab AI chip complex project with SpaceX and Tesla to make processors for robots, cars, and AI data centers.
Musk said last month the site would have two chip plants, with one for cars and humanoid robots and the other for AI data centers in space.
The partnership comes as Intel looks to strengthen its position in advanced chip manufacturing under a broader restructuring effort.
Intel’s foundry business reported a significant operating loss last year, and analysts said the tie-up could help demonstrate its ability to serve large-scale AI customers.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Partnership carries risk, details remain thin, and it could back Intel’s manufacturing plans
- The news arrived in a social media post, with no press release or filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yet. That leaves the deal’s legal and financial terms unclear for now 1.
- Some investors call it a vote of confidence in Intel’s manufacturing plus packaging, including the 18A process technology tied to its foundry turnaround story 2.
- That reaction stands out after 2025 reporting that Intel’s ceo weighed pausing 18A marketing to outside foundry customers. The focus would move to 14A, its next-generation chipmaking process 3.
- The plan targets 1 terawatt per year of compute. That scale dwarfs current norms, with tough delivery risks 4.
Musk-led chip push probes a more vertically integrated approach
- The push links Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, plus Intel in a U.S. stack. It challenges the usual pattern of U.S. design with Asian manufacturing 5.
- Terafab would combine several steps from design through production in one site. It would make logic chips for processing plus memory chips for storage in the same facility, which breaks with industry practice and adds complexity 4.
- Musk says the team aims for a nine-month chip cycle. That would beat the roughly yearly rhythm at Nvidia or Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 5.
- Some observers call Intel the only U.S.-based company with leading-edge logic manufacturing. If it delivers, it could offer a domestic option alongside Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) 2.
