Intel, Fortinet partner on next-gen security chip
Intel and Fortinet, a Sunnyvale-based cybersecurity company, said on July 21 they are collaborating to develop Fortinet’s Security Processor 6 (SP6).
Intel will provide design, packaging, and manufacturing capabilities to speed development and diversify Fortinet’s global supply chain.
Fortinet has not publicly detailed SP6, but the company said its proprietary firewall chips include three current Security Processing Unit families: NP7 for network functions, CP9 for content inspection, and SP5, which combines both on one chip.
Fortinet said SP5, its latest publicly described security processor, is built on a 7-nanometer process and will power the next generation of entry- and mid-range FortiGate firewalls.
That makes SP6 relevant to Fortinet’s core firewall technology.
The company has long positioned its custom application-specific integrated circuits as a differentiator, and Fortinet has claimed 17x faster firewall performance and 88% lower power use than standard central processing units for SP5.
