Intel CTO exit to join OpenAI, CEO Tan takes over AI oversight
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan will oversee the company’s AI and advanced technologies groups after chief technology officer Sachin Katti announced he joined OpenAI.
Katti, who became Intel’s CTO and chief AI officer in April, will help design and build OpenAI’s compute infrastructure for artificial general intelligence research.
Several top executives have left Intel since Tan became CEO in March 2025.
Intel has struggled to produce data center AI chips that rival Nvidia’s, despite its central processors being used in AI server systems.
Tan has expanded responsibilities for current leaders and hired a former Arm executive to lead Intel’s data center unit.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
Intel’s AI chip roadmap faces test after cto’s exit to OpenAI
- Gaudi 3, Intel’s AI accelerator, missed 2024 sales goals due to rough software and deployment complexity 1.
- In 2025, Intel scaled back Falcon Shores from a product to an internal engineering effort, casting it as a learning platform 2.
- The near-term bet shifts to Jaguar Shores, a rack-scale design on the 18A node with HBM 4 that could challenge Nvidia and AMD at system level 2.
- Katti’s exit creates a leadership gap as Jaguar Shores must unite IP blocks, custom silicon partners, plus workloads from edge devices to data centers 2.
- Gaudi’s $2 billion pipeline trails AMD’s $4–$5 billion GPU sales and Nvidia’s $100 billion-plus data center revenue, which tightens Intel’s timeline to earn AI trust 3.
Data center vendors can pursue OpenAI’s fast Stargate buildouts
- OpenAI’s Abilene hub is live, with potential to top 1 gigawatt 45. Five more U.S. sites could lift Stargate near 7 GW and above $400 billion in three years 45.
- Power gear, liquid cooling, and networking suppliers have near-term openings 45. Abilene employs over 6,000 construction workers, with 25,000 onsite roles expected across all sites 45.
- Katti’s compute work hints at broader hardware choices beyond GPUs, giving room for specialists in power delivery, advanced cooling, and interconnects.
- Colocation operators can prep for overseas growth 6. Targets include the United Arab Emirates (UAE with 1 GW in 2026), Norway with 230 megawatts, and Argentina with 500 MW at $25 billion 6.
