Intel CEO restructures leadership, names new CTO
Intel’s newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has announced changes to the company’s leadership structure.
Key chip divisions will now report directly to him to streamline the organization and foster innovation.
Sachin Katti, previously head of Intel’s networking chip division, has been promoted to chief technology officer and head of AI, succeeding Greg Lavender, who is retiring.
The data center and AI chip group, along with the personal-computer chip group, will also report directly to Tan.
Tan emphasized the need to reduce bureaucratic layers and improve decision-making, noting that organizational inefficiencies have hindered Intel’s ability to innovate.
These changes are Tan’s first major steps in reshaping Intel.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Intel’s leadership churn reflects semiconductor’s brutal accountability cycle
Lip-Bu Tan becomes Intel’s third CEO in just four years, highlighting the industry’s unforgiving nature when technology execution falters.
Intel’s stock has plummeted 60% in 2024 alone, its largest loss in 56 years, creating intense pressure for immediate leadership action 1.
The semiconductor industry’s long development cycles (typically 3-5 years) but swift market punishment creates a particularly challenging leadership environment where CEOs often pay for their predecessors’ technical decisions.
This pattern extends beyond Intel—the company has had 9 CEOs since its founding, with the past three (Krzanich, Swan, and Gelsinger) all departing amid criticism over manufacturing delays and missed market opportunities 2.
Tan’s focus on “organizational complexity and bureaucratic processes” that have been “slowly suffocating the culture of innovation” addresses the same challenges that hindered Gelsinger’s ambitious IDM 2.0 manufacturing strategy.
2️⃣ Manufacturing delays created cascading competitive disadvantages
Intel’s decline stems primarily from persistent manufacturing execution problems that transformed a temporary setback into a strategic crisis.
