Instagram reportedly coming to iPad after long delay
Meta is reportedly developing a version of Instagram specifically for the iPad, according to a report by The Information.
Currently, iPad users can only access a scaled-up version of the iPhone app, which is not optimized for the larger screen.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri had previously said that building an iPad app wasn’t a priority due to resource constraints and a smaller user base.
This move may be influenced by external factors, including the uncertain future of TikTok in the US due to ongoing legal challenges. Meta has not issued an official comment.
For now, iPad users can access Instagram through the web app or the iPhone app in Stage Manager mode, though neither fully utilizes the iPad’s capabilities.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Strategic pivot amid potential TikTok market disruption
Meta’s sudden interest in developing an iPad app for Instagram comes after years of publicly resisting the idea, and the timing directly correlates with TikTok’s precarious legal position.
Multiple analyses predict that if TikTok is banned, Meta stands to gain between $2.46 billion and $3.38 billion in advertising revenue from TikTok’s potential $12.34 billion loss in the U.S. market 1.
According to surveys, 29% of TikTok users would migrate to Instagram Reels as their preferred alternative, while advertisers show an even stronger preference with 56% indicating they would shift ad spending to Instagram 2.
This context reveals why Meta would suddenly prioritize iPad development now, after Instagram head Adam Mosseri repeatedly dismissed it as “not a big enough group of people to be a priority” as recently as 2023.
The potential influx of 170 million TikTok users would dramatically increase Instagram’s usage on all platforms, making tablet optimization strategically valuable for capturing and retaining these displaced users.
2️⃣ Instagram’s pattern of strategic adaptation to maintain competitive edge
Instagram’s history shows a consistent pattern of evolving to meet competitive threats, with the iPad app development representing the latest tactical adjustment.
Founded in 2010 alongside the iPhone 4 release, Instagram rapidly grew from 1 million users in two months to 10 million within a year by focusing on photo filters that enhanced low-quality smartphone images 3.
