Instagram launches the Edits app for pro video creation
Instagram has launched a standalone video editing app called Edits, which is now available for free on iOS and Android.
The app provides advanced editing tools not found in the main Instagram app, including AI animations from static images, green screen replacement, and subject cutouts.
First announced in January 2025, Edits also features project management tools, note tracking, and video performance analytics.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Edits is built for creators, with Meta planning to add keyframes, AI upgrades, and collaboration tools.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The battle for the creator ecosystem goes beyond social platforms
Instagram’s launch of Edits represents a strategic move in the larger platform wars, where companies are competing for control of the entire creator workflow, not just where content is published.
By developing a dedicated video editor that mirrors CapCut’s functionality, Meta is attempting to keep creators within its ecosystem from ideation through publishing, addressing a critical gap where TikTok’s companion app had established dominance.
The timing is particularly notable, as Edits was first announced while “TikTok and CapCut were both briefly unavailable on US app stores,” suggesting Meta is targeting moments of vulnerability in the competitive landscape.
This pattern reflects earlier platform expansions where companies moved from simple content hosting to offering comprehensive creative tools, similar to how Instagram evolved from a basic photo-sharing app in 2010 to a multimedia content platform with sophisticated editing capabilities 1.
Meta’s approach acknowledges that owning the creation tools directly influences where content ultimately gets published, as creators typically post first to platforms compatible with their editing software.
2️⃣ Vertical integration of content creation tools reflects changing user expectations
The surge in dedicated video editing apps for social platforms reflects how viewer preferences have evolved, with video becoming the preferred format for 50% of internet users according to industry research 2.
Instagram’s development of Edits follows the industry-wide recognition that platforms need to provide increasingly sophisticated editing capabilities as user expectations for content quality continue to rise.
Edits’ specific feature set—including AI animations, green screen replacement, and subject cutouts—mirrors capabilities that have proven successful in CapCut, suggesting Meta has identified these as critical features for modern creator workflows.
