Instagram uses AI to detect fake teen ages

Meta announced on April 21, 2025 that it is using AI to identify teenagers who misrepresent their age on Instagram to access adult accounts.

Suspected teen users will be placed into restricted Teen Accounts, regardless of their listed birthdate.

Teen Accounts, introduced last year, provide additional safeguards for users under 16.

These safeguards include limiting contact from unknown users, restricting certain content, and requiring parental consent to change account settings.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Underage social media use has persisted despite age restrictions for years

Meta’s AI age verification approach addresses a long-documented issue of children bypassing platform age restrictions.

Research from 2016 found that 34% of 8-10-year-olds and 50% of 11-12-year-olds reported using Facebook despite its 13+ age requirement 1.

The same study estimated approximately 20 million minors were using Facebook at that time, with 7.5 million under the age of 13, often creating fake profiles with parental knowledge or assistance 1.

This pattern shows how technical solutions have struggled to address what has been a persistent challenge for over a decade, with platforms previously claiming it was “almost impossible” to accurately identify underage users.

Meta’s current approach represents an evolution in strategy from simple birthday verification to more sophisticated detection methods, including analyzing birthday posts and using AI to identify potential minors.

2️⃣ A competitive safety race is emerging across major social platforms

Meta’s teen safety features mirror similar protective measures being implemented across the social media landscape as platforms respond to growing parental and regulatory pressure.

TikTok has implemented default private accounts for users 13-15, messaging restrictions, and download limitations specifically for teen users 2.

Similarly, Snapchat has restricted teen visibility in search results, implemented friend-only communication, and provides in-app warnings when strangers attempt contact 3.
