Instacart buys Israeli AI shelf-monitoring startup

Instacart has acquired Arpalus, a Netanya-based startup that uses AI and computer vision to monitor supermarket shelves in real time.

The acquisition supports the grocery technology company’s efforts to narrow the gap between online inventory listings and what is actually available in stores.

Terms were not disclosed. Estimates put the deal at tens of millions of dollars and described it as Instacart’s first acquisition of an Israeli company.

Founded in 2019, Arpalus has about 20 employees.

The startup said its software turns short shelf videos into real-time product availability data with more than 95% accuracy on average and can run on smartphones and other camera-equipped devices.

The acquisition builds on Instacart’s existing take videos workflow under Store View, a retailer tool that lets eligible shoppers film store aisles so retailers can track inventory more accurately.

Instacart said a typical grocery store carries more than 30,000 products, making manual inventory checks slow and error-prone.

The deal also supports Instacart’s Connected Stores strategy, which uses hardware and software to digitize stores.

Instacart said Arpalus’ technology will also be used in Caper Carts with external cameras.
