Infineon opens $114m semiconductor facility in Thailand
German chipmaker Infineon Technologies opened a semiconductor back-end facility near Bangkok on October 1, as Thailand pushed to expand its chip industry after it unveiled a strategy for the sector.
Infineon, a Germany-based maker of semiconductors for automotive, power, and security applications, said the plant will turn chips into finished, tested semiconductors.
The company said its initial investment was more than 100 million euros, or about US$113.57 million.
The site will start with up to 30,000 square meters of cleanroom space and could expand to 150,000 square meters.
Thailand’s Board of Investment said separately that the project was valued at US$1.4 billion, though the cited materials did not provide a public breakdown explaining the gap with Infineon’s initial outlay.
Infineon said the Thailand site will give it more flexibility alongside its factory in Malaysia.
Malaysia is an important global production base for Infineon, according to the country’s investment promotion agency.
Thai officials said the country attracted 910 billion baht, or about US$27.12 billion, in semiconductor and advanced electronics investment between 2023 and July 2026.
