🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Scaling payment businesses face margin compression despite revenue growth

Infibeam’s results illustrate a common challenge in the digital payments industry where rapid scaling can temporarily compress profitability.

Despite revenue surging 72% to Rs 1,280 crore, the company’s expenses jumped 77% to Rs 1,229.3 crore, with payment processing costs alone rising 79.5% to Rs 1,128 crore.

This pattern reflects the reality that payment companies often face rising transaction costs as they process higher volumes, especially when expanding into new markets or onboarding merchants with different risk profiles.

The company’s payment processing costs now represent nearly 88% of total revenue, highlighting how thin margins can become in the competitive payments landscape.

Infibeam’s international expansion plans to Saudi Arabia and Australia, targeting 12-15% of payments net revenue from these markets by FY28, suggest the company is betting on geographic diversification to improve long-term profitability 1.
