🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Indosat’s profit gains tie back to a concrete tech rebuild

  • Indosat reported average revenue per user (ARPU) of IDR44,000, slightly above Telkomsel’s last reported IDR43,400 1.
  • The lift follows Indosat’s replacement of legacy billing with Ericsson’s Digital Monetization Platform 2, a software system telecom operators use to bill customers and roll out new pricing plans faster.
  • The platform supports hyper-personalization linked to Indosat’s AI-driven personalization and improved customer services, helping push ARPU from around $2.50 toward a $3–$5 target per user 2.

Indosat offers a playbook for telcos facing thin margins

  • Revenue from traditional voice services keeps falling across Indonesia 3, which leaves data connectivity as a tighter-margin business.
  • Indosat is widening its product mix as it moves from a classic telecom company to an “AI-TechCo” 4, meaning a telecom operator positioning itself more like a technology services company.
  • New lines include GPU-as-a-Service, which rents access to specialized chips used to run AI workloads, forecast to generate $50-60 million in 2026 5 while tapping demand in the managed services market 6.
