Indonesia’s stock exchange CEO resigns after $84b market loss
The CEO of Indonesia’s stock exchange, Iman Rachman, resigned on January 30 following a two-day market decline that resulted in an estimated US$84 billion loss in market value.
The decline was triggered by MSCI’s warning of a possible downgrade of Indonesia from emerging market to frontier market status, citing concerns over trading transparency and ownership structures.
The Jakarta Composite Index fell 7.35% on January 28, and 1.06% on Januari 29 before rebounding 1.18% on January 30.
Rachman said he was stepping down to take responsibility for the recent market conditions and expressed hope that his resignation would help improve the market.
The Indonesian regulator announced plans to increase the free float requirement for listed companies to 15%, aiming to address MSCI’s transparency concerns.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The full impact and timeline of MSCI’s downgrade warning remain unclear
- No estimate has been given for how much money could leave. A clearer read would require Indonesia’s weighting in MSCI’s emerging market index, plus the total assets under management that track it.
- No schedule has been shared for any reclassification. A move to “frontier” market status has been raised by MSCI, yet no date has been provided for a final call or the speed of any index changes.
Regulatory response could create openings for compliance tech and investors
- Technology operators may see new demand after Indonesia’s financial regulator said it would raise the free float requirement on listed firms to 15%, responding to MSCI concerns about transparency, according to Reuters. This gives regtech (regulatory technology) firms a chance to sell shareholder analytics, disclosure workflows, and compliance monitoring tools to issuers under tighter rules.
- Investors could track firms that sit below the 15% bar. Those companies may lift free float through secondary sell-downs by large holders or fresh share issuance, which can create chances to buy stakes at lower prices.
