Sinar Mas digital arm starts building AI data center

SM+, the digital infrastructure investment arm of Sinar Mas, has started construction on SMX01, a data center aimed at supporting AI technologies.

Located in Jakarta’s Central Business District, this facility is a collaboration with Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA) and LG Sinar Mas, a joint venture between SM+ and LG’s digital division.

The project involves an investment exceeding US$300 million and addresses the growing digital infrastructure needs in Southeast Asia.

Projections suggest that this market could reach US$1 trillion by 2030, with the center expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026.

SMX01 will provide nearly 15,500 square meters of data hall white space, accommodating 2,400 server racks across nine data halls.

The facility will support various requirements, including colocation, hyperscale solutions, and applications for AI and machine learning.
