Indonesia’s QR code payments set to hit 17 billion by 2026

Bank Indonesia (BI) plans to expand its use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) by 2026, targeting 17 billion transactions and 60 million users.

The central bank also aims to increase the number of merchants accepting QRIS to 45 million, and expand cross-border QRIS capabilities to eight countries.

BI deputy governor Filianingsih Hendarta said QRIS reached 59 million users and 13.7 billion transactions in 2025, both exceeding the year’s targets.

She added that 42 million merchants now accept QRIS, with about 90% being micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Governor Perry Warjiyo noted that cross-border QRIS cooperation is being developed with South Korea, India, and Saudi Arabia, following earlier partnerships with ASEAN countries, Japan, and China.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  • QRIS logged 13.7 billion transactions in 2025, while missing metrics include total value, average ticket size (average payment amount), and QRIS’s retail payment share. Without these, volume may reflect tiny payments.
  • Through November 2025, digital payments hit 4.66 billion, with QRIS at 1.68 billion 1. The jump to 13.7 billion likely came in Q4 or from differing QRIS definitions.
  • Cash in circulation rose 13.09% year-on-year to Rp 1,250.6 trillion 1.
  • Payment gateway providers that process digital payments for merchants plus point-of-sale (POS) vendors can offer middleware (software that connects and translates between different systems) linking national QR code payment standards (local QR schemes) with QRIS rails (the underlying QRIS payment network), so merchants accept payments from Indonesian travelers.
  • South Korea sits in a sandbox pilot for a 2026 launch 2, while India and Saudi Arabia remain in planning 3.
  • Travel platforms and fintech apps for Indonesian travelers can embed QRIS acceptance maps with dynamic currency conversion (DCC), so users pay in their home currency with transparent rates. QRIS is live in Thailand and Malaysia, plus Singapore and Japan, with China in trial phase 4. Revenue comes from fees plus FX spreads as South Korea, India, and Saudi Arabia launch.
