Indonesia is facing criticism following a security breach in its e-visa system, exposing sensitive personal data of foreign tourists.

The incident is linked to a technical flaw in the e-visa database, discovered shortly after the rollout of autogate systems at airports nationwide.

Tourists have reported cases where their personal information was exposed to others while scanning QR codes on their visa documents.

Australian tourist Lauren Levin reported seeing the full names, dates of birth, passport numbers, and photos of other travelers on her mobile device. Other travelers said they also encountered similar issues.

The Directorate General of Immigration in Jakarta is currently investigating these incidents.

A spokesperson confirmed awareness of the issue and noted that the agency processes over 20,000 visa applications daily, recognizing that lapses may happen but stating they are working diligently to address the problems.

The extent of the breach remains unclear, potentially affecting thousands of tourists who utilized the e-visa system.
