Indonesia’s Danantara said to fund four key downstream projects

Indonesia’s state mining holding company, Mind ID, announced that country’s wealth fund, Danantara, will fund projects in four key downstream sectors: EV batteries, a Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR), and copper and aluminum processing.

Danantara was created to support national strategic projects across various ministries, focusing on initiatives that generate revenue.

President Prabowo Subianto has approved an initial proposal for 21 downstream projects worth 659.2 trillion rupiah (US$40 billion).

These projects aim to enhance Indonesia’s resource processing capabilities across 26 mining commodity sectors.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund enters a critical phase of strategic investment

Danantara represents Indonesia’s evolution in managing national assets, positioned as the country’s sovereign wealth fund focused on economic resilience and development-oriented investments 1.

The fund’s focus on four strategic sectors—EV batteries, aluminum, copper, and SGAR—aligns with global trends where resource-rich nations are creating specialized investment vehicles to capture more value from their natural resources.

This approach mirrors successful models from countries like Norway’s Government Pension Fund and Singapore’s Temasek, which have effectively leveraged sovereign wealth to drive strategic national priorities while generating financial returns.

The integration of AI and big data analytics into Danantara’s decision-making processes 1 signals Indonesia’s intention to create a technologically advanced sovereign fund capable of sophisticated investment strategies beyond traditional resource management.

By focusing on both cross-ministerial projects and revenue-generating investments, Danantara is attempting to balance immediate development needs with long-term financial sustainability—a delicate balance that many emerging market sovereign funds struggle to maintain.

2️⃣ National strategic projects reflect Indonesia’s infrastructure-led growth strategy

The downstream initiatives supported by Danantara fit within Indonesia’s broader National Strategic Projects (PSN) framework, which has identified 245 projects worth approximately Rp4,197 trillion ($267 billion) aimed at enhancing national productivity and competitiveness 2.

President Prabowo’s approval of 21 downstream projects worth Rp659.2 trillion represents a significant allocation of resources, continuing the previous administration’s focus on infrastructure as a driver of economic growth.

Historical data shows tangible progress with this approach, as 92 PSNs were completed by 2018 with a total investment of Rp467.4 trillion 3, demonstrating Indonesia’s capacity to execute large-scale development initiatives despite implementation challenges.
