Indonesia’s Danantara nears $1t, boosting key industries

President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia’s wealth fund Danantara could soon reach US$1 trillion.

He underlined the need for proper safeguarding and management of these assets.

After a briefing with Danantara officials and leaders of state-owned enterprises, Prabowo described the assets as a significant opportunity for Indonesia’s growth.

He said, “If managed well, this wealth can generate substantial funds for our nation.”

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund ambitions in global context

Prabowo’s claim that Danantara could soon reach $1 trillion in assets represents an exceptionally ambitious goal when viewed against the global sovereign wealth fund landscape.

The current estimated assets under management by Danantara at $900 billion already place it among the world’s largest sovereign funds, as global SWFs collectively manage approximately $7.4 trillion in total assets 1.

If Danantara reaches the $1 trillion threshold, it would represent roughly 13% of the global sovereign wealth fund market, making it one of the most significant state investment vehicles worldwide.

For perspective, most sovereign wealth funds evolved gradually over decades, typically funded through commodity export proceeds with a compound annual growth rate of about 20% since 2002 2.

SWFs typically allocate investments across diverse asset classes, with traditional portfolios comprising approximately 15% equities, 40% cash equivalents, and the remainder in fixed-income securities, though strategies vary by fund type and objectives 2.

2️⃣ Long-term investment strategy aligns with global SWF trends

Danantara’s stated long-term investment approach, as described by its CIO Pandu Patria Sjahrir, follows established practices among the world’s leading sovereign wealth funds.

Recent global SWF trends show increasing allocations to infrastructure and real estate investments, funded by reductions in government and corporate bond holdings 1, mirroring Danantara’s focus areas in energy and infrastructure development.

Globally, sovereign funds have been shifting away from fixed-income securities toward higher-return assets like equities and alternatives, influenced by prolonged low interest rate environments and a search for improved investment performance 2.
