Indonesia’s Danantara to manage state assets under new holding
Indonesia’s Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) plans to establish an investment holding company under Danantara Investment Management to oversee state-owned enterprise (SOE) assets.
Thohir said that the investment holding, known as Danantara Investment Holding, will be created by appointing an SOE in the investment sector.
“I’ve signed the necessary documents, and the process should be completed within one to two weeks,” he said.
Dony Oskaria, Chief Operating Officer of Danantara and Deputy Minister of BUMN, indicated that the holding will manage dividends from SOEs totaling 170 trillion rupiah (US$10.5 billion) annually.
These funds will be allocated by Danantara Asset Management to Danantara Investment Management for further investment.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Indonesia’s Danantara follows global sovereign wealth fund models with ambitious growth targets
Danantara represents Indonesia’s entry into the sovereign wealth fund arena with a massive $900 billion in state-owned enterprise assets under management, following successful models like Singapore’s Temasek 1.
The fund’s ambitious goal of boosting Indonesia’s GDP growth from 5% to 8% by 2029 aligns with state-directed capitalism approaches that have gained prominence globally, with sovereign wealth funds growing from less than $1 trillion in 2000 to over $11.8 trillion today 2.
This initiative comes at a time when countries with significant state ownership are demonstrating increased influence in global markets, with Indonesia seeking to optimize its 65 state-owned enterprises through consolidation and efficiency improvements 1.
The appointment of former central bank deputy governor Muliaman Hadad to lead the agency signals Indonesia’s commitment to professional management, though the fund will need to overcome investor skepticism related to governance concerns 3.
The establishment of a global advisory board that includes prominent figures like Ray Dalio indicates Indonesia’s desire to attract international capital and expertise while building credibility for the new fund 1.
2️⃣ Governance challenges loom large for Indonesia’s investment ambitions
Indonesia’s investment climate has been historically complicated by regulatory uncertainty, legal challenges, and corruption issues, creating significant hurdles that Danantara must overcome to succeed 4.
The separation of Danantara into Asset Management (operational) and Investment Management (financial) divisions represents a deliberate strategy to insulate the fund’s investment activities from operational challenges, addressing investor concerns about proper financial management 1.
