Indonesian university to debut AI program in 2026
Universitas Indonesia will launch an AI program at its Faculty of Computer Science in the 2026/2027 academic year.
The new program was approved by the university’s academic senate in October 2025.
Students will study topics such as AI modeling, AI system engineering, and human-centric AI, with coursework covering areas like machine learning, robotics, data mining, and natural language processing.
The curriculum follows national and international standards and includes collaboration with industry, government, and research institutions.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Program specifics remain unclear despite academic senate approval
- The academic senate approved the program in October 2025. Key details remain unknown, including the degree level and target enrollment, plus any plan to hire faculty for robotics or natural language processing (NLP).
- The curriculum lists work with industry, government, and research institutions. No partners are named, which makes it hard to gauge access to projects or internships that lift employability.
- The announcement omits Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) clusters, AI labs, or compute infrastructure. Students need these for hands-on machine learning and deep learning that separates strong AI programs from theory-only tracks.
Infrastructure providers can move early on university AI plans
- GPU cloud providers, chipmakers, plus Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) platforms can supply compute and lab gear to Indonesian universities starting AI tracks. The government set aside Rp 757.8 trillion (Indonesian rupiah) for education in the 2026 Draft State Budget 1.
- Education technology (edtech) firms with AI curriculum bundles, instructor training, and simulation labs can partner with institutions like Universitas Indonesia before rivals gain a foothold. Early moves can secure share in Indonesia’s growing higher education tech market.
- Outreach by infrastructure and platform vendors timed to budget cycles can lift conversion. Universities often lock funding for new programs 6 to 12 months before launch.
