Indonesian rupiah plunges to weakest level on record

The Indonesian rupiah opened significantly lower on Apr. 7, falling 1.47% to 16,898 rupiah per US dollar. This marks the currency’s weakest level on record.

As of 9:00 am local time, the rupiah led declines among Asian currencies.

Other regional currencies also weakened. The Taiwan dollar dropped 0.76%, the Malaysian ringgit fell 0.75%, and the Philippine peso lost 0.74%.

The South Korean won declined 0.51%, Thailand’s baht fell 0.49%, and Singapore’s dollar slipped 0.07%.

In contrast, the Japanese yen gained 0.49% against the US dollar. Hong Kong’s dollar also edged up by 0.04%.
