Indonesian ride-hailing drivers protest over unfair policies

Thousands of ride-hailing drivers, including motorbike taxi operators and couriers, are protesting in front of the Presidential Palace in Jakarta today, July 21, 2025.

The demonstration, known as “Aksi 217,” coincides with a mass work stoppage against government policies viewed as unfavorable to drivers.

Raden Igun Wicaksono, chairman of the Indonesian Two-Wheel Action Alliance (Garda Indonesia), said that about 50,000 drivers from various platforms are participating.

The protest is a response to drivers’ dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of their concerns, particularly regarding the Ministry of Transportation. Drivers argue that app operators influence policy decisions, which negatively affects their welfare.

A substantial issue is the increase in platform commission rates to 15%, which drivers believe reduces their earnings.

Protesters have presented five demands to President Prabowo Subianto and the Minister of Transportation. Their first request is to enact specific regulations for online transportation through a law or government regulation.

Their second demand is to establish a 90:10 revenue split between drivers and app operators.

The third demand is to set official rates for goods and food delivery services.

Fourth, conduct audits of app operators to ensure fair and transparent business practices. Lastly, they want to eliminate features considered harmful to drivers, such as low fares and paid membership systems.
