Indonesian online motorcycle taxi drivers to rally for labor rights

The Indonesian Transportation Workers’ Union (SPAI) has announced a protest by Indonesia’s online motorcycle taxi drivers scheduled for Feb. 17.

The demonstration will begin at 10 am in front of the Ministry of Manpower in Jakarta.

SPAI chairperson Lily Pujiati said the protest is expected to draw between 500 and 1,000 participants, which will continue until the drivers’ demands are met.

Drivers from across Jakarta and other regions such as Sukabumi, Dumai, Pontianak, and Pangkal Pinang have been urged to temporarily cease operations by going “off bid.”

The protest aims to advocate for labor rights, particularly the demand for holiday allowances. SPAI said the partnership system used by ride-hailing platforms in the country allows them to bypass obligations including holiday pay, minimum wages, overtime pay, maternity leave, and adherence to an eight-hour workday.

Additionally, Pujiati emphasized concerns about economic injustice, alleging that platform companies profit at the cost of the drivers’ welfare. Pujiati called upon the Ministry of Manpower to establish regulations that protect the rights of platform workers.

SPAI also criticized the working conditions for drivers, saying that earnings determined by platform algorithms often require drivers to work extensive hours, sometimes up to 17 hours a day, to meet their financial needs.

The Feb. 17 protest coincides with a coordinated shutdown of ride-hailing apps in multiple cities. Drivers collectively seek to fulfill their demands.
