Indonesian gov’t weighs IMEI blocking rule for lost phones
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital is considering regulations to block the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of lost or stolen smartphones.
The proposal was discussed by Adis Alifiawan, director at the ministry, during a public forum on September 29, 2025.
The plan would allow users to opt in to block or unblock their device’s IMEI, which can be done independently without police involvement.
The ministry aims to increase consumer protection by making it harder for stolen devices to be sold, as blocked phones would be limited to Wi-Fi use only.
Officials also expect the regulation to reduce illegal phone sales, and encourage buyers to check IMEI numbers before purchasing.
