Indonesian gov’t plans content filtering rules for Netflix, YouTube

The Indonesian government is preparing new regulations to filter content on video-streaming platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar.

The proposed rules, initiated by the Ministry of Culture through the Omnibus Law on Culture, aim to update existing film, cultural advancement, and cultural heritage laws.

Currently, Indonesia requires content filtering for films shown in cinemas and on television, but OTT platforms are not subject to the same mandatory curation.

Naswardi, chairman of the Film Censorship Board (LSF), said there is a lack of balance in content oversight between traditional media and streaming services.

A 2024 LSF survey found that many Indonesians want streaming content to be filtered according to audience suitability.

Streaming has become popular in Indonesia, with a Populix survey showing that 33% of respondents watch video-streaming daily, and YouTube and Netflix are the most widely used platforms.
