Indonesia, US to resolve tariff issues in 60 days

Indonesia and the US have agreed to address tariff policy issues within 60 days. The agreement was made during meetings in Washington, DC, on April 17, 2025.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and included senior officials from various ministries.

They met with US representatives from the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and the Department of Commerce.

Discussions focused on the US reciprocal tariff policy affecting Indonesia. Indonesia proposed increased purchases of energy, agricultural products, and engineering services.

Additional topics included cooperation on critical minerals, investment incentives, and streamlining import procedures for US products.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indonesia’s proactive negotiations reflect high economic stakes amid broader US tariff moves

Indonesia’s swift diplomatic response is timed strategically amid significant US tariff policies.

The US recently imposed a 32% tariff on Indonesian goods, threatening key export sectors including electronics, textiles, footwear, and furniture 1.

This occurs while the average effective US tariff rate has reached 28%, creating significant economic pressure across global trade 2.

Indonesia’s economic growth could decline by 0.3 to 0.5 percentage points from these tariffs, according to ministerial estimates, showing why quick negotiations are essential 3.

The bilateral trade relationship carries significant weight, totaling $38.3 billion in 2024 with Indonesia maintaining a substantial trade surplus of $17.9 billion that makes it particularly vulnerable to US tariff actions 4.

Indonesia’s approach of offering increased purchases of US energy and agricultural products represents a strategic response focused on creating economic complementarity rather than engaging in tariff retaliation.

2️⃣ The 60-day negotiation window aligns with broader US pattern of targeted bilateral trade talks
