Indonesia urges tech platforms to offer free AI detection tools

Indonesia’s deputy minister for communications and digital, Nezar Patria, has called on global digital platforms to provide free tools for detecting AI-generated content.

He said such features could help users identify hoaxes and prevent deepfake misuse, speaking at an event in Jakarta on September 10.

Patria cited Sensity AI data showing a 550% rise in deepfake content over the past five years, adding that actual numbers could be higher as deepfake creation tools become more accessible.

He noted that major tech companies, including Meta and Google, have the computational resources and algorithms needed to build public detection features.

Indonesia already regulates digital safety under laws such as the ITE Law and the PDP Law.

The government is also drafting new rules for ethical and responsible AI use.
