Indonesia urges ASEAN action on AI deepfakes, disinformation
Indonesia advocates for regional ASEAN collaboration to address AI-related disinformation and deepfake content in media, emphasizing the need for harmonized detection and labeling standards.
During the regional workshop in Jakarta, Director General Edwin Hidayat Abdullah highlighted the importance of cross-border mechanisms to combat malicious AI use, citing fragmented regulations as a challenge.
He noted that AI’s potential benefits should be balanced with safeguards to protect public interest and social equity.
Indonesia has also mandated digital platforms to implement systems that prevent misinformation and protect children, urging global platforms to provide AI content detection tools.
The government supports ASEAN initiatives such as the ASEAN AI Governance and Ethics Guidelines and the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap (2025–2030).
The focus remains on ensuring AI technology serves society while minimizing risks related to disinformation, deepfakes, and social inequality.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Indonesia’s regional AI effort relies on national rules that are still in progress
- ASEAN-wide standards remain the stated goal, yet Indonesia is already drafting its own domestic requirements.
- A planned ministerial regulation would require generative AI content on digital platforms, including social media, to carry a watermark or label that flags it as AI-made 1.
- Government officials have described a draft approach where platforms could remove posts that lack the AI label 2.
- The policy has not taken effect, although authorities have used platform enforcement steps alongside the draft, including a temporary block of Grok, the chatbot on X (formerly Twitter), while they sought assurance of compliance 1.
The draft framework puts responsibility for spotting AI content on platforms
- The proposal would shift deepfake detection away from individual users and onto the companies that build and host AI-generated content 1.
- Global tech firms would face a tough rule set in a country that ranks as the worlds third-largest market for ChatGPT users 1.
- The label-or-takedown setup gives Indonesia power to press for changes to AI products, and other developing nations in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) could copy the approach 3.
- If the system works, large AI providers may need region-specific features, which could split global product plans that once stayed consistent across markets.
