Indonesia to build $7b EV battery ecosystem by June 2025

Indonesia’s minister of energy and mineral resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, announced plans to begin construction on the world’s first fully integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem.

The groundbreaking for the project, valued between US$6 billion and US$7 billion, is scheduled for June 2025.

The project will cover the entire EV battery supply chain, including nickel mining, refining facilities, and High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology.

It will also involve the production of precursors, cathodes, and battery cells.

Speaking in Jakarta on June 3, Lahadalia reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to retaining added value from its natural resources within the country.

Indonesia’s integrated battery project will need to address significant environmental concerns associated with battery production.

Manufacturing lithium-ion batteries can emit between 2,400 kg and 16,000 kg of CO2 per battery, depending on materials and energy sources used 2.
