Indonesia tasks ecommerce giants with merchant tax

Indonesia’s tax office will start collecting income tax from merchants on Tokopedia, Shopee, Lazada, and Blibli will start on August 1, 2026.

The move follows the official appointment of the four ecommerce marketplaces as collectors on July 1 under Finance Ministry regulation.

The tax is set at 0.5% of a merchant’s gross turnover. The marketplaces will display the amount on electronic invoices, remit it to the state treasury, and report it through the unified monthly income tax return.

The collected tax can be credited against a seller’s annual income tax or counted toward final income tax when applicable. Individual taxpayers with annual revenue of up to 500 million rupiah (US$28,000) are exempt if they submit a declaration.
