Indonesia protests: TikTok resumes Live feature nationwide

TikTok has restored its livestreaming feature in Indonesia after a temporary suspension over the weekend following increased violence during protests that started in late August 2025.

A TikTok spokesperson said the service was reactivated on September 2, 2025, and that the company has implemented additional security measures, though no details were provided.

Users in Indonesia began using the livestream feature again from around 4:20 p.m. local time, with some accounts resuming live commerce and interactions.

TikTok said it continues to monitor the situation and prioritize user safety on the platform.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Social media platforms increasingly take proactive action during civil unrest

TikTok’s voluntary suspension of live streaming demonstrates how tech companies are now taking preventative measures during political tensions, even without direct government pressure.

The platform specifically cited “increasing violence in protest actions” when it temporarily disabled live streaming in Indonesia, where nationwide protests have resulted in at least eight deaths and over 3,195 arrests 1.

This proactive approach represents a shift from reactive content moderation to preemptive platform restrictions during periods of civil unrest.

The Indonesian protests, triggered by lawmakers receiving housing allowances worth ten times Jakarta’s minimum wage, escalated into widespread violence including arson and looting across multiple cities 2.

TikTok’s decision to suspend only live streaming while maintaining other features suggests the company identified real-time broadcasting as particularly problematic during active demonstrations.

2️⃣ Live streaming features face unique scrutiny during political unrest

The selective suspension of live streaming, while keeping other TikTok features active, highlights how real-time broadcasting capabilities are viewed as especially risky during volatile situations.

Live streaming allows immediate documentation and coordination during protests, potentially amplifying tensions in ways that pre-recorded content cannot match.

The Indonesian protests that prompted this suspension involved significant real-time coordination, with demonstrators primarily consisting of students and labor union members who organized across multiple cities simultaneously 1.
