Indonesia protests: Grab CEO visits killed driver’s family

Anthony Tan, group CEO and co-founder of Grab, visited Makassar in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province on September 1, 2025, to meet the family of a driver who died during a recent demonstration across the country.

Tan, along with Grab’s Indonesia leadership team, offered condolences to the family of Rusdamdiansyah, known as Dandi, who died on August 29, 2025.

Grab said it will provide immediate financial assistance, two years of health coverage, and business support for the late driver’s family.

The company also introduced an emergency response channel for driver-partners to report urgent situations, with access through a hotline, online help center, and live chat.

Tan also expressed condolences for another driver-partner who died in Jakarta, and wished recovery for several others injured in recent incidents.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Platform companies invest heavily in personal relationships despite massive scale

Anthony Tan’s decision to fly from Singapore to Makassar for a single driver-partner’s funeral reveals how platform companies manage stakeholder relationships differently than traditional businesses.

This personal gesture stands out considering Grab operates across 168 cities in eight countries, making such individual attention logistically challenging at scale 1.

The comprehensive support package—including immediate financial assistance, two-year health coverage through BPJS Kesehatan, and business capital with GrabKios mentorship—demonstrates how platforms create loyalty through benefits that extend beyond typical employment models.

This approach makes business sense when considering that driver-partners earned $12.8 billion on Grab’s platform in 2024, with over 99% meeting local minimum wage standards 2.

The investment in personal relationships helps platforms maintain their network effects, where driver satisfaction directly impacts service quality and customer retention.

2️⃣ Emergency response systems become competitive differentiators in gig economy platforms

Grab’s launch of GERCEP emergency response system alongside this tragedy highlights how safety infrastructure has become a key business differentiator for ride-hailing companies.

The timing connects directly to Grab’s 99.99% safety record, which the company actively promotes as “the highest in the industry” 3.
