Indonesia finishes initial phase of AI talent factory program

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has completed the initial phase of its AI Talent Factory program, which launched in August 2025.

The initiative, run in partnership with Universitas Brawijaya, aims to increase the number of skilled professionals in AI.

Komdigi plans to expand the program to other universities, including Universitas Gadjah Mada and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember.

The program focuses on three areas: providing updated education, connecting graduates to industry needs, and encouraging the development of AI-based solutions.

Komdigi said these efforts are intended to better prepare Indonesia’s workforce for changes in the global technology sector.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Program scale remains unclear despite ambitious national targets

  • Indonesia’s national AI roadmap plans 100,000 AI-skilled workers each year and aims for 20 million AI-literate citizens by 2029 1. The split is 30% developers who build systems, with 70% end-users in health, education or logistics.
  • Kearney pegs digital talent demand at 600,000 a year, far above state goals and exposes wide gaps 1.
  • Komdigi said the AI Talent Factory finished its first phase but shared no trainee counts, graduation rates, or placement results. This single-university pilot cannot be weighed against the 100,000 yearly goal.
  • The plan adds only two more campuses, Universitas Gadjah Mada and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, which signals a slow rollout 2. That pace may miss Indonesia’s need for 9 million skilled IT workers by 2030.

Tech vendors can secure early partners before programs grow

  • The AI Center of Excellence in Indonesia includes Nvidia’s Deep Learning Institute training and certification, while Cisco plans to train 500,000 Indonesians by 2030 through its Networking Academy 3.
  • Over two dozen software firms and startups already use Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s AI infrastructure for projects in education, food security, or healthcare, showing openness to outside partners 3.
  • Regional creative economy agencies broker state funding; applicants must submit AI adoption roadmaps plus partner maps that cover academia, industry, and community groups 4.
  • The government set aside Rp198 billion for paid internships for 20,000 people with six-month stipends 5. Employers in Indonesia can fund capstone projects or offer placements that absorb graduates.
