Indonesia eyes foreign investment with AI roadmap, official says

Indonesia is set to complete its first national AI strategy in August 2025, according to Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria.

The strategy aims to attract foreign investment and enhance the country’s role in the global AI and semiconductor industries.

The roadmap will outline infrastructure needs and sectoral applications to support AI development and investment opportunities.

Nezar said that the document is intended to foster an AI ecosystem and highlight investment opportunities for global tech firms.

Despite interest from Nvidia and Microsoft, Indonesia lags behind peers like Malaysia due to limited infrastructure and AI talent.

While AI could boost Indonesia’s GDP significantly by 2027, experts warn of readiness gaps in hardware and workforce capacity.

The strategy will also support semiconductor growth and address AI risks, although details on safeguards remain unclear.
