India’s Zepto Cafe closes 200 stores due to low demand

Zepto Cafe has temporarily shuttered about 200 stores due to muted demand for the cafe offering in certain areas, according to sources.

Zepto Cafe is the food service arm of Zepto, a quick commerce company based in India.

The company is planning to use staff from the affected stores for dark store operations, mainly in picker and packer roles.

Zepto Cafe operates more than 600 outlets and is reprioritising resources from some cafe stores to its quick commerce vertical or other cafe stores.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Zepto Cafe closures expose uneven unit economics in India

  • The chain logged 100,000 daily orders with 50% gross margin 1. Shutting 200 cafés for “muted demand” signals city-level swings, so order and store profitability stays highly local.
  • Net sales crossed ₹1,000 crore 2. Supply chain snags and a shortage of trained kitchen staff 2 make it tougher than quick commerce’s pick-and-pack model.
  • Blinkit and Instamart gained share 2. Splitting attention between food delivery and grocery can blunt execution against players that stick to grocery.
  • Moving cafe staff into picker and packer roles suggests dark stores are the core. Cafe is an experimental adjacency (a side business tested alongside the core), not a full bet.

Quick commerce push into food raises demand for kitchen tech and quality control

  • Orders grew 700% year over year 2 despite hiccups. Vendors can sell modular gear, automated cooklines, and temperature-controlled packs for dark stores serving 10-minute food.
  • A shortage of trained kitchen staff 2 creates demand for quick commerce training and turnkey management that scales while keeping food safety.
  • Software vendors plus hardware makers can pitch to enablers like Blitz, Inamo, and Zipee 3 (startups that build software plus logistics infrastructure for fast delivery). Sell tools for food inventory, shelf life, and compliance which diverge from grocery needs.
  • Food delivery inside quick commerce needs different infrastructure than grocery. That gap creates room for enablers in prepared food logistics, quality assurance, and kitchen network management (coordinating many small production kitchens).
