India’s Wipro Enterprises eyes semiconductor entry

Wipro Enterprises is exploring entry into semiconductor manufacturing via outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT), people familiar with the matter told The Economic Times.

Wipro Enterprises is part of the Wipro Group and operates as a separate entity with two divisions: Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting and Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIN).

Discussions are at an early exploratory stage and the company is scouting for a credible technology partner, the sources said.

Other Indian groups have unveiled OSAT projects, notably the HCL Group’s OSAT facility in Uttar Pradesh in a joint venture with Foxconn, the Tata Group’s OSAT facility in Assam, and the Murugappa Group’s CG Semi, which has inaugurated the first unit of OSAT project in Sanand, Gujarat, with Renesas and Stars Microelectronics.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

### Wipro is building an important link in the electronics and semiconductor supply chain

  • Wipro is assessing outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT), which covers chip packaging and testing. The idea builds on a Rs 500 crore investment by Wipro Infrastructure Engineering (WIN) in manufacturing Copper Clad Laminates (CCL) 1.
  • The new CCL facility is set to be India’s first dedicated plant for CCL, a base material used to make Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) 2.
  • India imports all copper clad laminate today. Wipro plans to supply a needed upstream input for the electronics ecosystem that OSAT sites support, even though CCL does not go straight into OSAT lines 2.

### Wipro joins a crowded race for India’s chip packaging market

  • Wipro remains in an early exploratory stage, while several competitors have moved further along and the timing pressure is real.
  • Announced OSAT efforts include HCL Group’s Rs 3,700 crore facility in Uttar Pradesh with Foxconn, Tata Group’s Rs 27,000 crore facility in Assam, and Murugappa Group’s CG Semi OSAT project in Sanand, Gujarat, with Renesas and Stars Microelectronics.
  • OSAT scale-up needs large funding, specialised process know-how, and trusted global partners. A practical obstacle is landing a strong technology partner and moving faster than teams already executing on public plans.
