India’s TCS, TPG partner to invest $2b in AI data centers
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced a strategic partnership with global investment firm TPG to support its AI data center business, HyperVault.
TCS, an IT services company based in India, and TPG plan to jointly invest up to 18,000 crore rupees (US$2 billion) in HyperVault over the next few years.
TPG’s investment could reach up to 8,820 crore rupees (US$994 million), with a potential shareholding of 27.5% to 49%.
The funds will be used to build AI-ready data centers in India with a combined capacity exceeding one gigawatt.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
TCS’s debt plan meets India’s grid and PPA gaps
- TCS announced Rs 18,000 crore (~$2 billion) with TPG for HyperVault, yet the $6.5 billion budget means heavy borrowing beyond equity 1. The company pegs $1 billion capex per 150 megawatts, so 1 gigawatt needs about $6.6 billion 2.
- No specific sites beyond Navi Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad 1. No confirmed grid allotment or signed renewable round-the-clock (RTC) power purchase agreements that keep AI facilities running 24/7.
- Over one-third of under-implementation renewable projects in India lack signed PPAs, creating offtake risk for builders 3. Without firm RTC PPAs, HyperVault’s AI-ready claim stays on paper.
AI data center operators gain an edge with early RTC PPA deals
- Capacity will rise from 1.5 gigawatts to over 10 gigawatts by 2030, which lifts demand for dependable clean power 4. Data centers need round-the-clock electricity, while solar or wind alone deliver greening only 20-70% 5.
- Blending solar, wind, and storage delivers 70-80% or higher greening with steady supply 5. ReNew sells such hybrids with commercial upside and growing policy support in renewable-rich states 5.
- Operators can secure long-term RTC PPAs now with integrated providers like ReNew (18.5 GW renewable portfolio) to lock in costs and meet sustainability mandates hyperscalers and enterprises use in procurement 5.
