India’s prime minister, Google CEO discuss AI collaboration

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Google CEO Sundar Pichai met at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi to discuss India’s AI development and potential collaboration.

Modi highlighted India’s efforts in AI, including talent development and digital infrastructure, while Pichai mentioned Google’s initiatives to support health, language accessibility, startups, and agriculture in India.

The meeting underscores India’s aim to establish itself as a global AI hub through investments in compute infrastructure and skilling programs.

The summit, which attracted over 600 startups and international pavilions, also saw participation from more than 20 heads of state, 60 ministers, and 500 AI leaders.

The discussions reflect ongoing cooperation between the government and technology firms on AI governance and responsible deployment.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The Modi-Pichai meeting is the public face of India’s state-driven AI strategy

  • The talks tie to India’s national AI mission, a state-backed program launched in March 2024 with an outlay of over ₹10,300 crore (about $1.2 billion) to build a domestic AI ecosystem 1.
  • The policy drive is drawing foreign money for infrastructure, alongside India’s goal of securing up to $200 billion in data center investments 2.
  • Google has a $15 billion plan, announced in October, to set up an AI data centre hub in Visakhapatnam in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Microsoft has committed $17.5 billion for cloud and AI infrastructure 2.
  • These moves support India’s push for sovereign AI models (AI systems developed and governed domestically) trained on Indian languages and local contexts, including use in sensitive or regulated sectors such as governance and healthcare 2.

India is shifting from a tech back office to a global AI engine

  • The summit drew more than 600 startups plus more than 20 heads of state. It also brought 60 ministers and 500 AI leaders. The scale signals India’s shift from tech consumption to a role in the global AI production chain. Separately, the IndiaAI Mission aims for India to become a major provider of AI services in the near future 2.
  • Nvidia has partnered with Indian cloud computing providers to supply advanced processors for data centres that can train and run AI systems 3.
  • Hiring plans are changing too. More than 80% of Global Capability Centers (GCCs), offshore hubs multinationals use for functions such as engineering and operations, are projected to be AI-led over the next six-to-eight months, according to ANSR 4.
  • ANSR’s CEO says more global leadership roles such as “chief AI officer” are now being set up in India 4.
