India’s NPCI tests ChatGPT payments with Razorpay
India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Indian fintech company Razorpay have started a pilot program with OpenAI to enable ecommerce payments through ChatGPT.
The new service, still in testing, lets users make purchases on ChatGPT using Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s digital payments network.
The pilot will assess if UPI can be used to let AI agents handle payments for users while maintaining security and user control.
Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are joining as banking partners, and Bigbasket is among the first ecommerce platforms to join the program.
The pilot uses UPI’s new ‘reserve pay’ feature, which allows users to set aside funds for specific merchants.
UPI processes more than 20 billion transactions every month across India.
Other companies, including Cashfree, have also launched similar agentic AI payment solutions this year as competition in AI-enabled payments grows.
