India’s MeitY unveils guide to train AI without sharing data
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched a handbook in Bengaluru on using the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA) to train AI models.
The handbook sets out how institutions can work together on AI training while keeping control of their data.
The ministry said the framework combines contracts, controlled computing environments, privacy safeguards, and data provenance. This lets participants trace a dataset’s source, permissions, and use during training.
DEPA is an Indian government framework that NITI Aayog described as a secure, consent-based architecture for data sharing, and MeitY also hosts a DEPA document on its website.
Information technology secretary S Krishnan unveiled the handbook, which was developed with support from the iSPIRT Foundation, an Indian technology think tank.
At the roundtable, principal scientific adviser Ajay Kumar Sood said DEPA allows models move to data instead of moving data between institutions.
