India to launch first domestic chip this year

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that India will launch its first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip later in 2025.

The minister highlighted ongoing efforts to attract equipment manufacturers, material producers, and chip designers to enhance the country’s semiconductor ecosystem.

This initiative is a key part of the Semicon India program, launched in 2021.

The program aims to provide subsidies for semiconductor fabrication facilities, display fabs, chip packaging, sensors, and design entities to develop a strong semiconductor industry.

Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Electronics are reportedly planning to introduce domestically produced chips by 2026, with production in Assam expected to start by late 2025 or early 2026.
