India’s Gupshup launches AI agent for customer chats
India’s conversational AI company Gupshup, in an announcement from San Francisco and Mumbai, launched Superagent in beta for managing customer conversations across channels such as WhatsApp and SMS.
The company said Superagent can create campaigns and customer journeys from prompts, and can be used on the web or through WhatsApp, or voice.
Gupshup also launched Superclaw, a self-hosted version for small and medium-sized businesses and enterprises in regulated industries that want customer data to stay on local devices.
The company said the products build on its messaging platform, which handles 10 billion messages a month for 50,000 businesses in more than 100 countries.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Behind the AI launch, a story of financial recalibration
- Gupshup is rolling out new AI products, yet investor Fidelity has marked down the company’s implied valuation to about US$280–US$300 million 1.
- The figure sits nearly 80% below the peak US$1.4 billion “unicorn” valuation set during the 2021 funding boom 1.
- That squeeze comes even as estimated annual revenue climbed to US$360.5 million in 2024, up from US$150 million in 2021 2.
- The company raised more than US$60 million through a mix of equity and debt. Founder and CEO Beerud Sheth said the round was not priced, which avoided a public valuation while bringing in funding 3.
From messaging pipes to intelligent agents, a needed evolution
- SuperAgent moves Gupshup beyond message delivery toward AI-driven decisions inside business chats.
- Growth in autonomous AI agents also fuels the shift, with the market forecast at roughly US$236–US$253 billion by 2034 4.
- The product puts Gupshup up against Twilio, a cloud communications software company, and Infobip, a business messaging platform. It also faces Google and Microsoft, which are exploring AI agents 3.
- SuperClaw adds a self-hosted option aimed at large enterprises in regulated sectors like finance and healthcare, with a focus on data privacy.
