🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Groww’s Rs 1.1 lakh crore market cap hides risks from Futures and Options (F&O) rules and revenue concentration
- About 85% of revenue comes from brokerage and transaction fees 1, and SEBI’s October 2024 F&O curbs cut Q1 FY26 fees and commission income by 17.4% year on year 1.
- Across top discount brokers, active NSE clients fell by over 4.7 lakh from March to May 2025, while Groww lost 2,000 in May 2, which pressures engagement and trading volumes.
- Operating margin rose from 36% to 59% between FY23 and FY25 3, yet reliance on brisk trading keeps earnings exposed to more SEBI action and a 41x P/E near the ~40x industry mark 4 leaves little cushion if brokerage income shrinks or diversification lags.
Tech vendors for discount brokers can gain as Groww’s in-house build leaves gaps at smaller rivals
- Groww builds most tech in house 3, which steadies the platform during spikes and speeds feature rollouts. That pushed tech spend up 67% to Rs 440 crore in FY25 3, a bill smaller brokers cannot match.
- Vendors for KYC/AML and cloud surge handling can win work. Fraud checks plus market data have demand at mid-tier or full-service players such as ICICI Securities (1.95 million clients) 2 that lack Groww’s engineering depth.
- NSE-linked active client data puts Groww at 1.28 crore clients 52, while second-tier brokers still serve millions with weaker tech, which opens room for Business-to-Business Software-as-a-Service (B2B SaaS) vendors to scale across many smaller platforms.
