India’s electronics boom hides a reliance on foreign parts

• Electronics exports jumped 38% to $31 billion in the first eight months of FY26 1. Yet value addition, the share of locally produced components and processes, remains thin. Mobile phone output grew about 90% by FY24 versus FY20, but imports of phone parts almost doubled, which left net exports negative (imports exceeding exports) 2.
• Display module (screens and related assemblies) shipments into India climbed even as phone production rose, which signals India lacks local display lines 2.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka build supplier hubs
