India’s data center pipeline hits 8.3GW: report
India’s data center development pipeline across major markets has reached 8.33 GW, according to Knight Frank India.
The consultancy said 322.4 MW is under construction. Meanwhile 2.92 GW is committed, and 5.41 GW is in early development.
Knight Frank linked the expansion to AI adoption, cloud computing, digital transformation, and data localization requirements. One example is the Reserve Bank of India’s 2018 payments mandate that required payment-system data to be stored in India.
The pipeline is more than 5x India’s current live operational capacity of 1.6 GW. Separately, the Council on Energy, Environment and Water said India’s installed data center capacity has nearly tripled since 2020 to about 1.5 GW. The organization estimates this capacity could reach 4.5 GW to 6.5 GW by 2030.
Mumbai leads the pipeline with 3.75 GW, followed by Hyderabad at 1.93 GW and Chennai at 1.36 GW. CEEW also said 15 states have introduced dedicated data center policies or used broader information technology and industrial policies to attract projects.
CEEW said data center developers face grid constraints in major clusters, highlighting execution risks as demand for power and water rises.
