India’s Cyient, Azimuth AI launch locally designed power chip

Azimuth AI and Cyient Semiconductors have launched ARKA GKT-1, which the companies describe as India’s first-generation intelligent-power platform-on-a-chip for high-efficiency edge AI and smart energy applications.

The chip was unveiled by Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw.

According to the companies, ARKA GKT-1 integrates multi-core custom computing, advanced analog sensing, memory, and intelligent power management into a single, energy-efficient system on a chip (SoC).

The product is designed for high-efficiency edge AI and smart energy uses.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  • The launch announcement withholds GKT-1’s process node (the manufacturing generation measured in nanometers) and foundry (the contract manufacturer), leaving cost and scale unknown.
  • 28nm grows at a 5% compound annual rate for edge uses 1. 7nm and below will make up over 56% of 2025 foundry revenue, with mature nodes at 36% 1.
  • Without clarity on mature or advanced nodes, buyers cannot tell if GKT-1’s power efficiency comes from design or the process.
  • Production status is unclear, and taped-out prototype (design finalized and sent to fabrication) versus volume-ready parts changes time-to-market for smart utilities and industrial automation.
  • Hardware makers of system-on-modules (SOMs, compact compute modules) and evaluation boards (hardware for prototyping) can build around GKT-1. Azimuth AI must ship software development kits (SDKs), compilers (program translation tools) and reference designs (blueprints for proven implementations).
  • Tool makers can offer tuned toolchains (integrated sets of development tools) plus environments. Google’s Agent Development Kit packs user interface (UI) with tracing and debugging for agent developers 2.
  • Smart utilities plus battery management systems (electronics that monitor and control rechargeable batteries) let developers build vertical solutions (end-to-end offerings tailored to specific industries) for India’s smart city projects 3.
  • If Cyient keeps its turnkey application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) service accessible, smaller semiconductor startups can use similar paths to build custom edge AI chips for niche industrial work 4.
  • Early partners that secure development kits (boards, software, and documentation for prototyping) can grab a lead in India’s Internet of Things (IoT) plus industrial automation.
