India’s BluSmart board orders audit over mismanagement claims
The board of BluSmart, an electric vehicle ride-hailing company, has commissioned a forensic audit of its financial records.
This investigation, led by Grant Thornton, follows whistleblower complaints regarding alleged financial mismanagement.
The company has been burning over 20 crore rupee (US$2.34 million) monthly, raising red flags among investors.
Last year, BluSmart’s management claimed to have 400 crore rupee (US$46.78 million) to 500 crore rupee (US$58.48 million) in cash during fundraising talks. But months later, the company reportedly ran out of funds.
A US$50 million fundraising effort also stalled after existing investors pushed for external participation.
In a cost-cutting move, BluSmart suspended its ride-hailing services and shifted to operating fleets for Uber.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Supplier dependency created a perfect storm for BluSmart’s downfall
BluSmart’s troubles highlight how inter-company dependencies can create cascading risks in capital-intensive sectors like electric mobility.
The company’s operational model critically depended on its largest fleet supplier, Gensol Engineering, which was recently downgraded to a D rating by ICRA due to reports of falsified data and delayed payments 1.
This supplier relationship proved to be BluSmart’s Achilles’ heel when Gensol’s financial troubles emerged, compromising BluSmart’s ability to maintain and expand its vehicle fleet.
The connection created a domino effect where Gensol’s problems directly impacted BluSmart’s operational capacity and ultimately contributed to its cash flow crisis.
This is a reminder of how startups that rely heavily on single suppliers or partners create vulnerability points in their business model, which can quickly become significant threats.
2️⃣ Forensic audits often arrive after the money has already disappeared
BluSmart’s case follows a troubling pattern where forensic investigations typically occur only after substantial financial damage has been done.
