India’s Bharti Airtel to invest $2.2b in financial services arm
India’s telecom company Bharti Airtel plans to invest US$2.2 billion over the next few years into its financial services arm, Airtel Money, which received an NBFC license from the Reserve Bank of India earlier this month.
The investment will mainly come from Airtel, with Bharti Enterprises contributing the remaining funds.
The move aims to expand Airtel’s digital lending operations amid increasing competition from firms like Jio Financial Services and Bajaj Finance in India’s non-bank lending sector.
Airtel said the capital infusion will help leverage its large customer base and diversify its business beyond telecom into areas such as data centers, cloud, and enterprise services.
The company’s expansion into financial services reflects a broader strategy to develop new revenue streams in a competitive market environment.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Airtel is scaling a proven lending engine, not starting from scratch
- Over the past two years, Airtel built a credit platform that has already disbursed more than ₹9,000 crore (about US$1.08 billion) in loans 1.
- The fresh funding will expand an operation run on a data and analytics engine supported by more than 500 data scientists 2.
- A new license places Airtel Money in the non-deposit-taking non-bank financial company (NBFC) category, which lets it offer lending and other specified financial activities without taking public deposits 3.
Telcos are reshaping fintech with built-in advantages
- Airtel’s approach follows a wider pattern where telecom operators use customer data and distribution networks to compete with traditional lenders and pure-play fintechs.
- The setup can work well in markets with low credit penetration, including India where the formal credit-to-GDP ratio is 53% 1.
- Similar bets have paid off elsewhere. Airtel Africa’s mobile money unit has 52 million customers and is pursuing an IPO (initial public offering), with analysts eyeing a valuation closer to $4 billion 4.
