Indian startups, investors bet on China-inspired micro-dramas

Startups and investors in India are increasingly focusing on micro-dramas, short video content lasting one to two minutes.

Inspired by successful models in China, this format is gaining traction among mobile-first audiences.

Platforms like Flick TV, Eloelo, Kuku FM, Chai Shots, and ReelSaga, along with major players like Amazon, ShareChat, and Zee Entertainment, are driving the trend.

Millions of users have engaged with micro-drama episodes on platforms such as Moj and Quick TV, according to ShareChat co-founder Manohar Charan.

Venture capital is backing the shift, with Flick TV securing US$2.3 million in seed funding and ReelSaga raising US$2.1 million. Chai Shots is reportedly in talks for more funding.

Zee Entertainment and Eloelo are launching new micro-drama apps aimed at younger audiences.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s digital content evolution follows a pattern of progressive compression

India’s entertainment landscape has consistently evolved toward shorter formats that match decreasing attention spans and mobile consumption habits.

The transition began with the shift from traditional TV (introduced in 1959) to satellite channels in the 1990s, then to web series, and now to micro-dramas with just 1-2 minute episodes 1.

This trend aligns with India’s digital transformation journey, where mobile screens have surpassed TV screens, with BCG reporting 250 million digital screens compared to the combined total of TV and movie screens 2.

The micro-drama format specifically targets the “mobile-first” ecosystem that emerged after Jio’s launch in 2016, which dramatically increased rural teledensity and made data affordable for millions of new internet users 2.

Despite this evolution, traditional TV still dominates overall video consumption at 82%, suggesting micro-dramas are currently capturing a specific segment rather than the entire market 2.

2️⃣ Monetization remains the persistent challenge for India’s digital content economy

The micro-drama industry highlights India’s enduring struggle to monetize digital content despite massive audience growth.
